Jakarta – planned to broadcast digital broadcast are limited in the Greater Jakarta area in September 2009. To catch the broadcast of this trial, the public should use the set top box if you do not already have digital TV devices.
Set top box is an additional device to receive digital signals emitted by a TV station transmission system that uses technology Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial (DVB-T).
This device will then convert the analog broadcast signal to be received by the type of television with the NTSC system, PAL, and SECAM, which is currently owned by the majority of Indonesian people.
Director General for Communication and Information Facility Tulung Freddy said public trials could be conducted if a consortium of six private TV stations have completed internal testing. Consortium calling itself KTDI (digital television Indonesian Consortium) members ANTV, Metro TV, SCTV, Trans TV, Trans 7, and TVOne.
“Hopefully by next September already be released after completion of this tested starting in March,” he said after the signing of cooperation with a consortium of providers set top box device at SCTV Tower, Senayan City, Jakarta, Tuesday (03/03/2009).
The consortium was later appointed PT Hartono Istana Technology (HIT) as the company that would produce a set top box device. The device, called Polytron DVB has been marketed in the Greater Jakarta area since February this year with a price of USD 425 thousand.
“We must produce more because every month we can target the five thousand units sold. It’s for anticipated spikes in demand when launching September,” said St. Kadarusman, Relationship Marketing Manager to detikINET HIT.
Freddy himself assess the price of USD 425 thousand, which is offered to the public is still too expensive. But he believes prices will likely decline as the increasing public demand.
Of the 230 million population of Indonesia, said Freddy, 50 million of them already have affordable broadcast TV. He estimated 75 percent or approximately 30-40 million of the population already has a TV device. “I think in the next three years set top box device will absorb 30-40 million units,” he said.
Trial digital broadcasting, such as the government announced, will be held after this year since last year (2008-2009). Then until 2012, entering the digital broadcasting standard as well as granting permission socialization digital TV providers.
Starting in 2013 until 2016, entering the implementation stage expansion of digital broadcasting coverage in major cities and surrounding areas. Then, the next year into the corners. Then, until finally in 2018 would cease analog impressions nationally.
Freddy himself did not estimate the digital broadcasting until 2018 to reach the entire population of Indonesia, but in 2016. Acceleration of two years early because he thought triggered two things.
“Firstly because all the TVs on the market only to digital TV. And second, the TV stations will also begin investing all devices to digital broadcasting as well as the rejuvenation of analog devices,” he concluded.
